March 9 - Note from Bob Machen re: Chuck Knece - Just got this e-mail from Kay Knece. I also talked to Buck Parker a few minutes ago, Buck said that Kay will need to make a decision on Monday, as to whether to unplug Charley or not. Buck said Kay told him that Charley's systems are shutting down, and it doesn't look like he can make it much farther. I know Kay would like to hear from all of you, and she asks for our prayers. Their address is: Chuck and Kay Knece 2205 Glendale Ave. Kannapolis, NC 28081 704-933-4104 chuka@ctc.net Best regards to all, Bob

March 8 - Note from Steve Benicke re: Mayborne: Shipmates and friends, Please check out the Mike Mayborne website. Let's get those petitions to Mike's daughter, Jennifer. If Jennifer will give us the Lee County location perhaps we can get a duty section together and make an appearance at the May 13, 2008 Hearing. Please pass this on.
Benicke
March 8 note from Mike Mayborne's daughter: Hey Guys, A quick update. My Uncle has created www.mikemayborne.com. You can go on line and fill out a petition, see family history, and Mikes history. May 10 is last date for on line petitions, Hearing will be held May 13 at Lee County States Attorney Office. If any of you can make it, please let me know I will add you to the list. We have an excellent showing of Police support this year going to the hearing and we would love to have the Navy represented as well. We have learned it is not the family that makes the difference but the Armed Services and Police representation protesting that really stands out to the Prisoner Review Board. Pass it on !!!! Thank you for your support!!!!!

Feb 12 note from Bob Machen re: Bud Melton - I talked to Nancy Melton Monday afternoon. Bud is in the hospital and not doing very well. He has pneumonia now, and since his immune system is drained, he is slipping. Nancy said his body is all bloated up from the kidney disease, and he continues to gain weight. She told me that she gave him a quarter of an orange earlier in the day, and he didn't have enough strength to get the peel off of it. Doesn't sound good, does it? She also said that she was able to get him an appointment at the UK hospital in Kansas City, KS, where he will likely get better care. Bud would undoubtedly enjoy hearing from his shipmates. Nancy would bring any cards or letters to the hospital for him. Their address is as follows:
Bud Melton 2890 S. Aviator Lane Republic, MO. 65738

Feb 10 note from Dennis Kauppien re: Ken Ayers -Got a note from Ken Ayers and he sent $20.00 for the website. He says he's still not 100% , but is getting better. Elsie is also under a doctor's care, but he didn't mention why.He wanted me to tell the crew " Thanks for being there when I needed it" and that he is proud of them. Maybe you could post this and suggest that he would love to hear from his crewmates.

Jan. 2 regarding Ken Ayers - from daughter - This picture of my dad was taken Christmas Eve standing next to the cards that previous crew members sent, wishing him well. He wishes to extend a thank you to all of those who sent their good wishes for a speedy recovery. As you can all see he is home and doing well. The second photo of course is Mom and Dad on Christmas Eve. Together they want to say thank you, and wish everyone a happy 2008.
Sincerely, Fay LaMothe, daughter of Ken Ayers

- Thanks for the newsletter. I wish Bob could make the reunion-I am from Scranton, Pa.- but Bob does not get far these days. He is mostly bedridden and it takes a lot of care. But have a great time. And if anyone remembers Bob and is in the Va. Beach-Norfolk area, tell them to call or stop. Take care.Sept. 10 - Note Regarding Bob Thomas

Tom, Sorry for the late response and thank you for the pictures. It's great you were able to get ahold of Chuck Taylor.I have not checked out the website recently but am hoping Chuck's email is there so I may say "hi" to him. Have been in touch with Bob Able, Billy Johnston and Bob Bradley, quite often recently. Mostly discussing the reunion in PA. Was definitely looking forward to it, however, I will be starting a new Chemotherapy session on Sept.12th so this may interfere with the reunion. My heart, soul and memories will be there with all the shipmates, irregardless of physical presence. Give my best to all! Once again thank you for you letter of concern. Sincerely, Bruce LewisAug 31 note from Bruce Lewis -
